Policy making in the Australian Democrats

The Australian Democrats formulate their policies by a fully democratic method, one that is to the best of our knowledge unique amongst the world’s political parties.

Its purpose is to give every member the opportunity of an equal and direct say in determining policy, a requirement written into the party’s Constitution.

Most other political parties formulate their policies either via their Parliamentary Team or Party Conference.  This method disempowers the everyday rank and file members.  The Australian Democrats approach is totally different.

Along every step of the process, rank and file members are able to be involved in the policy making process which ends with a postal ballot of the membership.  This means that each vote is of equal value regardless of position held.
