The Australian Democrats are committed to using the best available research and information to guide decisions at all stages of the policy process.
Using evidence to inform policy is not a new idea, but it has struggled to cut through in a widespread political culture that has become too focused on winning elections at any cost. Our commitment is to model within our own party, that it is possible to replace ideologically-driven politics, with rational decision making that takes into account different stake-holder perspectives. We are committed to identifying what works, no matter what side of the political spectrum the idea comes from; highlight gaps, and enable change.
Our policies start with an Objective, which identifies the end point or goal for the nation. They then contain high level Principles that can be used to evaluate the bills that come before Parliament, whatever form they may take. All our policies are justified with references and explanations, which can be found in our Policy Framing Statements.
These policies were ratified by the members between the 15th - 21st April, 2019. Australian Democrats policies are always subject to review - our policy volunteers consult with stakeholders outside the party, and members are strongly encouraged to participate by giving feedback at all stages of the policy process.
